Jury Chosen For Fmr. Pres. Trump Hush-Money Trial

April 19, 2024

We have our jury.

Judge Juan Merchan after choosing a jury of 12 people to participate in a criminal case regarding former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for the White House.

Why It Matters: The Manhattan court chose 12 jurors to preside over the hush-money trial involving Pres. Trump. He faces 34 felony counts due to allegations he falsified business records to cover up reimbursements of hush-money payments made by his former attorney Michael Cohen “to bury allegations of extramarital affairs” in the weeks leading up to the 2016 election (The Associated Press). With the jury now in place and alternate jurors in the process of being solidified, prosecutors will likely begin presenting their case next week. It will mark the first trial of a former U.S. president in history. Pres. Trump denies any wrongdoing in the case.

The AP explains, “The process of picking a jury is a critical phase in any criminal trial but especially so when the defendant is a former president and the presumptive Republican nominee. Prospective jurors have been grilled on their social media posts, personal lives and political views as the lawyers and judge search for any bias that would prevent them from being impartial.” The jury includes multiple lawyers, a sales professional, a speech therapist, a security engineer, a software engineer, a teacher, a speech therapist, a retired wealth manager and an investment banker.
