It was molten red lava. There’s several areas of pretty robust fountaining. It’s just really, really pretty.

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park spokesperson Jessica Ferracane describing Kilauea volcano, which began erupting on early on Wednesday.

Why It Matters: Kilauea volcano, located on the Big Island in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The current eruption is taking place within Halemaumau crater, located in Kilauea’s summit caldera. The volcanic activity does not pose a threat to any surrounding communities.

Did You Know? Kilauea volcano erupted almost continuously for 35 years (1983-2018). As one of the volcano summits collapsed and the eruption came to an end in 2018, lava spread out over 30 miles of roads and destroyed hundreds of homes.
