Lawmakers Race To Vote On Budget Prior To Friday Deadline

March 22, 2024

I think we’re going to get there.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), lead Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, after lawmakers agreed on a $1.2 trillion spending package expected to go up for a vote on Friday.

Why It Matters: Lawmakers have until just after midnight on Friday to pass a government spending package, or else a partial government shutdown goes into effect over the weekend. They agreed on a budget that would provide government funding for certain operations through September, though whether they vote affirmatively and the bill gets signed into law prior to the deadline remains up in the air. If not, a partial government shutdown could impact certain government operations – such as the departments of Defense, Labor, Homeland Security and Health and Human Services.
