"You kick a few pebbles, you turn a few stones, and eventually you have an avalanche.”

On this day in 1980, Candy Lightner’s 13-year-old daughter, Cari, was struck and killed by a drunk driver with multiple DUIs while walking to a church carnival near Sacramento, CA. Lightner channeled her grief to start Mothers Against Drunk Driving (or MADD) – now the largest nonprofit in America focused on preventing driving under the influence. MADD has supported more than 1 million victims and helped inspire or pass hundreds of state and federal laws to prevent drunk driving.
