I am deeply saddened and sorry to inform you all that it has turned out to be a terrible tragedy.

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera in a live address on Tuesday, announcing the death of Malawian Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine others after their plane crashed due to bad weather.

Why It Matters: Malawi is located in southeast Africa with a population of about 21 million (about the same number of people as Florida). In 2019, the World Bank ranked it as the fourth poorest nation in the world. Vice President Chilima, 51, has been elected vice president under two separate presidents, with his first term from 2014-2019 and his second beginning in 2020. Approximately 600 personnel were involved in the search and rescue efforts that spanned more than 24 hours, concluding with the official announcement that Vice President Chilima and nine others died in the plane crash in the mountainous region.
