“What’s most important is that I’m an Alaskan being sent to represent all Alaskans. Yes, being Alaska Native is part of my ethnicity, but I’m much more than my ethnicity.”

Ms. Peltola is Alaska's newest member of Congress. She is the state's first woman to serve in the House, the first Democrat to hold the seat in nearly 50 years, & the first Alaska Native to be elected. She was previously a member of the state legislature. She won a special election to fill Rep. Don Young's position, who died in March & was the longest-serving Republican in Congress. Ms. Peltola will serve until January, when his term is set to end. She will appear on the ballot again in November for the normal two-year term election & will go up against the same Republican candidates she defeated for the seat in Congress: Sarah Palin (former governor) & businessman Nick Begich.
