Mayor Joe Herring Jr. of Kerrville, Texas, the site of catastrophic flash flooding in the early hours of July 4th, 2025.

Why It Matters: Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick called the flash flooding a “mass casualty” event. The Guadalupe River, which draws visitors and tourists particularly in summer months, rose to or close to 100-year flood plains. Early estimates suggest the river rose 26 feet in 45 minutes between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. in the morning.

What law enforcement said on the record so far:

24 deaths in Kerr County.

23-25 missing from Camp Mystic — a private Christian girls camp operating for nearly 100 years in the area. The camp reported had 750 campers onsite.

Total estimate of missing and unaccounted for in the area: TBD.
