… he evacuated them to the nearest friendly location, undoubtedly saving their lives.

The Medal of Honor citation for retired Army Capt. Larry Taylor, a Vietnam War Army helicopter pilot who flew into dangerous enemy fire in 1968 to save four servicemembers.

What To Know: Vietnam War Army helicopter pilot Captain Larry Taylor received America’s highest military honor for extracting four soldiers using his two-man Cobra helicopter, a feat that had never been accomplished or even attempted (The White House). 3,516 Americans have received the medal of honor since it was first presented in 1863.

Who qualifies for the honor? The White House explains that it is awarded to “members of the Armed Forces who distinguish themselves conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of their own lives above and beyond the call of duty …”
