Mexico Makes History Electing Its First Female President

Climate scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum (61), on her election as the new president of Mexico.

Why It Matters: Claudia Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City andNobel Prize-winning climate scientist,” will become Mexico’s first female president and first president of Jewish descent (Reuters). Her six-year term begins on October 1. Many expect her to continue the outgoing president’s social welfare policies. Sheinbaum will inherit public security and migration issues, the largest budget deficit in decades, as well as a complex relationship with the U.S.
