Michigan Judge Orders Car Washes As Shoplifting Sentences

I don’t think everybody that steals is a bad person. Sometimes people are just down on their luck. But there’s going to be consequences when you break the law.

Judge Jeffrey Clothier orders shoplifters of a local Michigan Walmart to wash cars for free in the store’s parking lot as punishment.

Why It Matters: Recently elected Judge Clothier says he was shocked by the number of shoplifting cases coming from a local Walmart (about 80 miles north of Detroit) and wanted to take an innovative approach to discourage crime and serve the community. Judge Clothier says he will join the offenders when the free car washes happen between March and April.
