MI Primaries: 13% Of Votes Cast “Uncommitted”

Layla Elabed, campaign manager for Listen to Michigan, a movement to vote “uncommitted” in the Democratic primaries until the U.S. changes their policies on the Israel-Hamas war. About 13% of primary votes were cast “uncommitted” in protest of the war.

The Results: Michigan’s presidential primary took place on Tuesday. The battleground state featured wins for both former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden in their respective parties. Pres. Trump won 67% of the vote, followed by Nikki Haley with 27% in the Republican primary. Pres. Biden won 80% of the vote in the Democratic primary.

Interesting To Note: Michigan is the state with the highest population of Arab Americans and became a focal point for the Democratic party as “It could have lasting effects into the general election” (The New York Times). Additionally, in Ann Arbor, the city of the University of Michigan, nearly one-third of the vote was “uncommitted.”

Biden has recently said a temporary ceasefire by next week could be possible.
