Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer following a shooting on the Michigan State University campus. Three students were killed and five remain in critical condition.

This is a developing story.

Who & What: Eight students were shot at Michigan State University's campus by a 43-year-old gunman. Three of the victims died. Five are critically wounded. The gunman fled the scene but was located a few hours later when someone reported seeing him. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot after being confronted by officers.

Where: The first attack occurred in an academic building with classrooms. The second attack occurred at the nearby student union. Both buildings are accessible to the public.

When: Around 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

Why: The motive is unknown. The gunman has no known ties to the university.
