Miniature Poodle Wins Best In Show At Westminster

May 15, 2024

No words. I am so happy. I am proud of this dog.

Kaz Hosaka, the breeder and handler of Sage, a black miniature poodle who won Best in Show at the 148th Westminster Kennel Dog Show in New York. After the Kentucky Derby, “the dog show says it’s the second-longest continuously held sporting event in the U.S. …” (The Wall Street Journal).

Why It Matters: Sage, a three-year-old poodle from Texas, won Best in Show after competing against six other dogs who had each won their respective categories; in total, more than 2,500 dogs competed at Westminster this year. Sage became the first female dog to win the title since 2020 and the fourth miniature poodle to ever win Westminster’s top award. After the win, Hosaka, her handler, announced he would no longer compete and plans to retire after 45 years of being involved in Westminster. He noted Sage will retire, as well.

Something Interesting: This year at Westminster, more Chihuahuas competed than any other breed, with Labrador retrievers and golden retrievers ranking next.
