Another Record for “Most Decorated Gymnast Ever”

June 3, 2024

I couldn’t be more proud of how I’m doing at this time in the year, and just gaining that confidence over and over, getting myself back in front of a crowd, and just doing what I do in practice.

U.S. gymnast Simone Biles, 27, after winning a record-breaking ninth all-around national title on Sunday evening.

Why It Matters: Biles, “the most decorated gymnast ever,” broke another record on Sunday with her ninth U.S. all-around title (USA Gymnastics). The national competition featured Biles winning every single event she competed in, marking the second time she has swept all of the national titles (first doing so in 2018). Expected to compete in the summer Olympic games for the third consecutive time, she will partake in the upcoming U.S. Olympic trials later this month.

More Context: Biles returned to gymnastics competition in 2023 after dropping out of the women’s gymnastics team final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (which occurred in 2021). Her decision to withdraw due to mental health concerns drew widespread support along with some criticism and ignited many conversations about mental health.
