Long story short, it’s a weird bacterium that can be tough to find and sequence.Dr. David Needle, pathology section chief at the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture at the University of New Hampshire, regarding a mysterious respiratory illness spreading in dogs throughout the country.
Why It Matters: Thousands of dogs have been sick, some of which have died, across 14 states in previous weeks as veterinarians struggle to understand the unidentified “agent” (bacteria or virus) causing the illness, which often first begins with cold-like symptoms (cough, sneezing) and then can suddenly lead to acute pneumonia.
The following states have identified a mysterious respiratory illness in dogs according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) – the leading nonprofit veterinary medical group in the nation:
- New Hampshire
- Rhode Island
As professionals seek to better understand the unidentified illness, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends dog owners should avoid going places like dog parks, grooming facilities, and pet stores with their canines.
