NASA Team Completes Year-Long Mars Simulator

It’s actually just so wonderful to be able to say ‘hello’ to you all.

NASA volunteer crew member and mission commander Kelly Haston after emerging from a simulated Mars environment she and three others lived in for over a year.

Why It Matters: The NASA team lived in the artificial alien environment and performed tasks such as simulated spacewalks, growing and harvesting vegetables, and living in isolation with limited communication. Steve Koerner, deputy director of Johnson Space Center where the simulation took place, said the team’s work was “crucial science as we prepare to send people on to the red planet.”
