Starting at 45 to 50, you could gain as much as 10 years of healthy life and this study just shows the truth of that at a cellular level.
Associate dean and professor of medicine at the University of Texas, Dr. Thomas Blackwell, commenting on a new study suggesting that aging begins to accelerate from ages 45 to 55, with different organs aging at different rates.
Why It Matters: Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences took tissue samples from people between the ages of 14 to 68 and studied the proteins in those samples. They determined aging picks up between the ages of 45 and 55, offering a helpful roadmap for future research concerning age-related chronic conditions. Blackwell also indicated the study provides a chance for people to change their aging trajectory while in the accelerating period, though he stated, “the window is short.”
Bottom Line? The study suggests people still have the chance to see health benefits when lifestyle changes are made later in life.
