Study: Writing Down Feelings & Discarding Paper Reduces Anger

We expected that our method would suppress anger to some extent. However, we were amazed that anger was eliminated almost entirely.

Lead researcher Nobuyuki Kawai describing the results of a new study suggesting a helpful strategy to reduce feelings of anger.

Big Picture: Writing down reactions to something negative on a piece of paper and then throwing the paper away or even shredding it significantly helps minimize and eliminate feelings of anger. The findings suggest a simple method for neutralizing anger which “could be useful in various daily situations as well as behavioural therapies,” study authors explain.
