🙏2: The number of Romanians injured by a Russian drone , raising more concerns about an expanding conflict. Romania’s president called it the “the worst incident” in the country since Russia invaded Ukraine, but Russian President Vladimir Putin denies the drone is Russian. As a member of NATO, Romania and others in the largest military alliance in the world share a principle of “collective defense” — “an armed attack against one NATO member shall be considered an attack against them all.”
🪖1: U.S. MQ-1 drone shot down by Iran this weekend, according to U.S. Central Command. The U.S. responded by targeting Iranian sites in “self defense strikes” that focused on “eliminating Iranian air defenses, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones that posed clear threats to ships transiting regional waters.” Early Monday, Pres. Trump wrote on social media that “Iran really wants to make a deal” and pushed back on critics: “Just sit back and relax, it will all work out well in the end – It always does!”

🌍4.8 million: The estimated population of Kuwait. On Monday, the Gulf state announced its air defense system engaged “hostile missiles and drone attacks” purportedly from Iran. Kuwait is one of the top 10 oil producers in the world.
📱“as many as a dozen”: The number of women Senate candidate Graham Platner reportedly exchanged “sexual messages” with during his marriage, according to a New York Times report that Platner and his wife dispute as “gossip.” The Maine Senate race has become increasingly important nationally as Democrats try to shrink or flip the Republican Senate majority; Platner, a Democrat, challenges Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican in Maine who has held the seat for nearly three decades.
- Of note: Platner has come under fire for a series of comments on a variety of topics, including some made about his military service and serious accusations of other service members. My husband, who served in the same place at the same time as Platner but who does not know him personally, refuted Platner’s claims in a recent editorial for The Free Press; the site also published an interesting separate editorial about why controversy around Platner will not impact voters. If this story becomes a more central issue, we can provide more in-depth reporting, but because of my proximity to this topic, I wanted to share this with you. At this time, I don’t see any conflict with our current reporting, but we constantly assess our editorial choices.
🧑⚕️282: The number of Ebola cases recorded in Congo as the leader of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 1,100 suspected cases remain under investigation outside the country, raising concerns about further spread of one of the worst outbreaks of Ebola on record. The World Health Organization recently categorized the outbreak as “public health emergency of international concern” — the highest level of alert that will free up funds and resources to address this disease.
🚓“around 900”: The number of people reportedly held at Delaney Hall, an immigration center in New Jersey that has become the latest flash point over federal immigration policy. The Trump administration says those held include “the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens,” while critics call this description a lie. Clashes between protestors and law enforcement continue outside the facility, with The New York Post reporting law enforcement arrested “at least 20 protestors” Sunday night for violating curfew; detainees have reportedly started a hunger strike over conditions.
