To unlock the best of America we need a leader who is clearly focused on three things: Economy, energy and national security. … that is why today I’m officially announcing I’m running for the president of the United States of America.
North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum (R) announcing his presidential bid for the White House.
Why It Matters: Burgum is now the eighth high-profile Republican to formally announce his bid for the White House. In concluding his campaign announcement, he said, "This campaign, this election, is all about what it takes to bring out the best of America and improve every American life. … When we take the time to look, we can see that we are surrounded by the best of America. Working together, we will unlock the best of America in all of us."
Background: Burgum (66) grew up in the small town of Arthur, N.D. (est. population of 317), and earned his master's of business administration from Stanford University in 1980. He has professional experience as a venture capitalist and software entrepreneur. In 2009, Burgum was awarded N.D.'s highest honor for citizens – the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award – for his business and philanthropic efforts. He became the 33rd governor of N.D. in 2016, and was re-elected to serve a second term in 2020. Did you know? In 1983, Burgam "mortgaged a quarter section of farmland homesteaded by his grandfather to invest $250,000 in a fledgling business software firm called Great Plains Software," which later went public (1997) and was purchased by Microsoft in 2001 – where Burgum served as senior VP until 2007 (InForum).
