Why It Matters: Leaders in the United States' biggest city say illegal dirt bikes continue to "threaten the safety" of NY streets.

• The bikes were destroyed in a highly-publicized event to send a "strong message" about how seriously law enforcement is taking the issue of illegal motorbikes. The remnants of the vehicles will be recycled.
• Mayor Adams says police have seized around 2,000 illegal dirt bikes and ATVs *already* in 2022 — an 88% increase compared to last year.
• The NYC mayor says the threat posed by these bikes continues to increase and that they are a "menace" to quality of life in the city, including as noise pollution.
