National Institutes of Health director Dr. Francis Collins on the new Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2.
  • The variant, first identified in South Africa, was labeled a "variant of concern" by the World Health Organization on November 26th.
  • Omicron is one of five variants of concern designated as such by the World Health Organization.
  • A variant receives this designation if there's concern about increased transmissibility, severity of disease, and/or decrease in effectiveness of current public health policy.
  • Why It Matters: It may take weeks to understand just how much of a threat this variant poses. Meanwhile, the U.S. is restricting travel from certain countries in Africa, including South Africa, and Israel has closed its borders. Big Picture: Regardless of this variant, the number of COVID cases in America has increased nationwide – prompting concern about flu season.
