On the Record: Congressional Dem. Encourages Pres. Biden to Withdraw

July 3, 2024

I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw. I respectfully call on him to do so.

A historic fixture in Texas Democratic politicsRep. Lloyd Doggett (77) becomes the first currently elected official to go on the record encouraging Pres. Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential election.

Why It Matters: A longtime Democratic congressman from Texas, Rep. Lloyd Doggett has become the first currently elected official to go on the record encouraging President Biden to withdraw from the presidential election as concerns mount regarding how the President’s recent debate performance (and presence on the ballot) will affect additional political races. In response to calls for an alternative, President Biden’s running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris, said, “Look, Joe Biden is our nominee. We beat Trump once, and we’re going to beat him again, period.”

More Context: Rep. Doggett’s statement comes just before the President meets with Democrat governors (and congressional leaders) at the White House. Though the presidential election has received a lot of attention in recent weeks, 2024 serves as a major election year for many positions: 10+ U.S. governors, every member in the House and over 30 senators. This week marks four months until election day.

The Statement Rep. Doggett publicly shared on Facebook:
