On This Day: Walt Disney Was Born

December 5, 2023

Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things … and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.

Walt Disney, who over the course of his 43-year Hollywood career, transformed the art of movie making.

Why It Matters: Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago. Growing up on a farm in Missouri, Walt developed an interest in drawing from an early age, reportedly selling his first sketches at the age of seven. At 21 years old, he and his brother Roy founded Disney – now regarded as one of the largest media companies in the world – though it took 14 years before the brothers had their first major production (“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”). From that point forward, Walt spent his career developing unprecedented TV programming and films, while also bringing to life concepts like DisneyLand and Walt Disney World.

Disney turned 100 years old in October, now ranking among a small percentage of U.S. companies to reach past the triple digits.
