OpenAI Pausing Use Of ChatGPT Voice That Sounds Like Scarlett Johansson

May 21, 2024

When I heard the released demo, I was shocked, angered and in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and news outlets could not tell the difference.

Actress Scarlett Johansson referring to one of the voices used by ChatGPT, a popular artificial intelligence chatbot run by OpenAI.

What To Know: OpenAI has five voices that users can choose from when using ChatGPT, the most popular artificial intelligence tool on the market as of 2023. Johansson says in September (before the rollout of the voices), OpenAI CEO Sam Altman asked if her voice could be used, an offer she says she turned down. On Monday, Johansson released a statement explaining her “disbelief” at how Altman would use a voice in ChatGPT that sounds so similar to her own. OpenAI says it is will pause the voice Johansson is referring to, known as Sky, as it works to address concerns regarding how it chooses voices for ChatGPT. The contention comes amid debates about the evolving technology of artificial intelligence.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated late Monday, “The voice of Sky is not Scarlett Johansson’s, and it was never intended to resemble hers. Out of respect for Ms. Johansson, we have paused using Sky’s voice in our products. We are sorry to Ms. Johansson that we didn’t communicate better.
