It was either one or none … There was no opportunity to bring you home at this time. But Paul, we’re coming for you.

United States special envoy for hostage affairs, Roger Carstens, on Paul Whelan, an American still “wrongfully detained” in Russia.

Who Is Paul Whelan? A veteran and corporate security executive with citizenship in the U.S., Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Canada. He was arrested in Russia in 2018 while visiting for a friend’s wedding. He received a 16-year prison sentence for espionage charges, which he has consistently denied. The wrongful detainment and subsequent release of WNBA player Brittney Griner has brought attention to Whelan's case. However, John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council recently said: “They hold Mr. Whelan differently because of these espionage charges."
