In my career, I’ve never heard of a hundred thousand eggs being stolen. This is definitely unique.

Spokesperson for the Pennsylvania State Police, Trooper First Class Megan Frazer, referring to 100,000 eggs being stolen from the back of a trailer in Pennsylvania on Wednesday. The eggs are worth around $40,000, making the crime a felony.

Why It Matters The investigation of the egg theft remains ongoing without any leads disclosed to the public. The heist comes amid sky-high egg prices caused by bird flu, which requires farms to slaughter millions of chickens, leading to increased egg prices for consumers across the country.

  • The 100,000 eggs were stolen from the back of a Pete & Gerry’s Organics distribution trailer on Saturday evening in Antrim Township, just north of the Maryland border. While the police continue investigating, they noted, “We’re relying on leads from people from the community. So we’re hoping that somebody knows something, and they’ll call us and give us some tips.” (AP)
  • The average price per dozen eggs hit $4.15 in December. The U.S. Agriculture Department expects prices to increase another 20% in 2025.
