The Polish military in a social post on Tuesday evening in response to Russian drones entering Polish airspace late Tuesday night and continuing into early Wednesday morning. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says preliminary data show 19 Russian drones flew into Poland, and Polish and NATO forces shot down three or four.
Why It Matters: Poland is a member of NATO, which has a mutual defense agreement between members, including the United States. Prime Minister Tusk noted it was the first time a “significant portion” of the drones were launched from Belarus, a Russian ally; previous incidents have been from drones launched by Russia in Ukraine. NATO and European leaders condemned the event, with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte calling it “reckless behavior.” Russia has said it will consult with Polish military officials, claiming, “No objects on Polish territory were planned to be targeted.” As of this writing there has been no response from the White House.
Meanwhile, Ukraine reported that Russia launched more than 400 drones and over 40 missiles overnight, killing two and damaging homes and businesses. This comes after a Russian air strike yesterday that killed 24 Ukrainian civilians collecting pensions and injured 19 others. Russia reported destroying more than 100 Ukrainian drones overnight.
