His Holy Father is in good, overall condition, alert and breathing spontaneously.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni providing an update on Pope Francis after his preplanned colon surgery.
- Ahead of his surgery on Sunday, the Vatican announced the 84-year-old pontiff would undergo surgery to treat “symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon” (narrowing of the large intestine), a common condition among older people.
- Afterwards, the Vatican reported that Pope Francis “reacted well” to the surgery, which involved removing a part of the left portion of his colon and lasted about three hours.
- He is currently staying in a special suite reserved for popes.
- The Vatican has provided scant details but said Pope Francis is expected to stay in the hospital for about a week while he recovers, assuming there are no complications.
