potty training cows

The cows are at least as good as children, age 2 to 4 years, at least as quick.

Animal studies Lindsay Matthews, lead author of a new study on the potential to potty train cows.
  • The idea for this research started as a joke on a New Zealand radio show – a joke on the rather serious topic about the challenges surrounding proper disposal of animal waste.
  • Lindsay Matthews, who is based in New Zealand, worked with colleagues in Germany to see if cows could be taught where to go to the bathroom.
  • The study included 16 calves – 11 of which learned to use the "MooLoo" – a place to go #1 (in bathroom talk). The cows did not learn where to go #2.
  • "Remarkably, the calves showed a level of performance comparable to that of children and superior to that of very young children." (Study)

Why This Matters: Cows can urinate up to 8 gallons a day! The mixture of waste can be toxic for the environment, including water sources. The study's final line? " . . . clever cattle can help in resolving the climate killer conundrum."

No bull: Scientists potty train cows to use ‘MooLoo’
