As it grows and the hype increases, you know, everyone gets kind of excited. So that’s where you get all those people who don’t generally buy tickets, think, ‘Why not? Why not me?’

Store director at Cosentino’s Price Chopper in St. Joseph, Missouri, Debbie Kempf, discussing the Powerball jackpot.

Why It Matters: The Powerball jackpot hit $1 billion on Monday when no winning tickets were sold for the $922 grand prize. The next drawing will be on Wednesday evening; if there is a winner, it would be the third-largest jackpot in Powerball history.

Something to Consider: While the overall sum of the jackpot is about $1 billion, its cash value is around $516.8 million. Powerball says the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million (which makes it more rare than getting struck by lightning or getting attacked by a shark!).
