The revocations within this order will be the first of many steps the United States Federal Government will take to repair our institutions and our economy.
The White House in the online publication rescinding previous executive orders just hours after President Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. Pres. Trump repealed 78 of former Pres. Joe Biden’s actions and signed in numerous executive actions on Day 1.
Why It Matters: After his parade and before the inaugural balls, President Trump began signing executive orders reflecting his administration’s priorities and goals for the new term. Executive orders allow a president to establish policy without the use of Congress; however, executive orders can be overturned by courts or Congress.
Quick overview of (some) of the executive orders:
- Jan. 6 Pardons: Pres. Trump issued pardons for about 1,500 individuals convicted or criminally charged in the 2021 riot on the U.S. Capitol.
- Immigration: Pres. Trump signed 10 orders related to immigration, including declaring a national emergency at the southern border, ending birthright citizenship and designating drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
- Economy: Pres. Trump instructs federal agencies to conduct examination of trade practices with other countries (particularly Canada, China and Mexico). Pres. Trump also established the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), though it has already received multiple lawsuits challenging its constitutionality.
- TikTok: Pres. Trump’s order pauses Congress’ TikTok ban for 75 days, giving the president time to address security concerns and evaluate a path forward.
- Renaming Sites: Orders outline Pres. Trump’s plan to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America (meaning U.S. federal maps would have to change the name) as well as change the name of the tallest mountain in the U.S., Denali in Alaska, to Mount McKinley (its previous name prior to 2015 when former Pres. Obama changed it).
- DEI and Gender: Pres. Trump ended diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives across federal agencies. He also declared the federal government can only recognize male and female as the two sexes.
