President Biden Delivers State of the Union

March 7, 2024

Not since President Lincoln and the Civil War have freedom and democracy been under assault here at home as they are today.  What makes our moment rare is that freedom and democracy are under attack, both at home and overseas, at the very same time.

President Biden delivering the State of the Union address, March 7, 2024.

Why It Matters: The 2024 State of the Union matters for both President Biden’s assessment of the nation, as well as how he chose to present his priorities for the year ahead as the current President *and* candidate for reelection.

The President spoke just over an hour:

• The speech began with Ukraine. Pres. Biden discussed the urgency and stakes of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the need for more funding.

• While Pres. Biden made brief mentions of Israel, Iran, Hamas, Gaza, and China in the speech ~ he mainly stuck on domestic issues, like the economy and the border (specifically that he wanted a bipartisan proposal on the border passed by Congress).

• He did not mention former President Trump by name, but did specifically “call out” his “predecessor’s” comments on both foreign affairs/domestic policies.

• The speech closed with Pres. Biden discussing his age – framing his age as a tribute to his experience in office.

Pres. Biden says the U.S. military will “lead an emergency mission to establish a temporary pier in the Mediterranean on the Gaza coast’ for aid.

Pres. Biden continues to discuss advocating an assault weapons ban.
