President Xi Jinping calls me his friend, and I call him my friend, too.

Russian President Vladimir Putin prior to arriving in China on Tuesday, where he is meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Why It Matters: World leaders from around the world arrived in China this week for a summit regarding President Xi’s infrastructure project, the Belt and Road Initiative. President Putin “is at the top of the invitation list,” France 24 reports of the Russian leader. President Putin and President Xi, who consider one another “dear friends, last met in March in Russia and declared a partnership with “no limits” — particularly emphasizing an alignment against the West.

Something to Consider: The high-profile meeting occurs as most attention is focused on the Israel-Hamas war. Both world leaders have criticized Israel’s response to Hamas’ attack on October 7, calling for a ceasefire in the region. In comparison, the U.S. has emphasized its support for Israel and its right to defend itself against Hamas (a U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organization).
