In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States.

Why It Matters: President Trump’s announcement – “formally beginning the 2024 Republican primary” – comes after the midterms, in which Democrats remain in control of the Senate and the House is still undetermined, though numbers indicate Republicans will likely have the majority. The presidential bid was made “several months before modern White House candidates traditionally announce” candidacy, according to Fox News.
- This announcement was expected, with President Trump and those close to him hinting at a re-election campaign leading up to Tuesday night. In his speech, President Trump said, “We are a nation in decline. We are here tonight to declare that it does not have to be this way.”
