This historic second state visit is set to highlight and renew the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.

A White House official Monday in a press call prior to President Donald Trump’s state visit to the United Kingdom. King Charles issued the invitation in February, hand-delivered by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer while he met with President Trump at the White House to discuss trade deals.

Why It Matters: This marks the first time a U.S. president has been welcomed to the UK for a second state visit. The trip includes historic ceremonies – from a carriage ride through Windsor castle to a joint flyover – as well as trade deal discussions, including a nuclear energy agreement aimed at helping the U.S. and UK reduce reliance on Russia for nuclear fuel. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the agreement is “not just about powering our homes, it’s about powering our economy, our communities, and our ambition.”

Related: The visit follows the firing of the UK ambassador to the U.S., Peter Mendelsohn, last week after emails surfaced between him and convicted sex offender Jeffery Epstein. In addition, a “Trump Not Welcome” protest is expected in London on Wednesday.
