The color immediately attracted our attention, but we found it hard to believe that we had found true purple from such an ancient period.

  • Archeologist excavating a site called “Slaves’ Hill” discovered a rare purple fabric.
  • Previous archeological digs have found this color on pottery but never on fabric.
  • The color purple has special significance in ancient times, for royalty and those of high stature, as the dye was extraordinarily hard to come by: “The dye is said to have been more valuable than gold.”

Why It Matters: The first of is kind discover just south of Jerusalem confirms the existence of this color on fabric described in the Bible, worn by King David and even Jesus Christ.
