I am reminded of how much we can be thankful for. These last seven decades have seen extraordinary progress socially, technologically and culturally that have benefitted us all; and I am confident that the future will offer similar opportunities to us and especially to the younger generations in the United Kingdom and throughout the Commonwealth.
Queen Elizabeth marking 70 years since taking the throne.
- Queen Elizabeth became the lead British monarch when her father died at the age of 25.
- Her “Accession Day” happened on February 6th (the date of her father’s death in 1952), but her coronation (a ceremony where she officially “was crowned”) happened in June.
- Why It Matters: Queen Elizabeth is the longest reigning British monarch. Her platinum jubilee will be celebrated throughout the year.
- Of Note: In her remarks on the anniversary of her accession, Queen Elizabeth made it clear she wants Prince Charles’ wife Camilla to be queen.
Interesting Fact: “In the intervening seven decades, the queen has shared confidences with 14 prime ministers and met 13 U.S. presidents.” (AP)
