The word of the summer for the economy is ‘resilient.’ The consumer is hanging in there, but still on edge until the trade deals are done.

Chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, Heather Long, on the first estimate of gross domestic product (GDP) in the United States for the second quarter of 2025.

Gross Domestic Product = “The total monetary or market value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country’s borders in a specific time period” (Investopedia).

Why It Matters: The U.S. has the largest economy in the world and the GDP reading provides a key snapshot of its overall health. The latest reading exceeded expectations, with the economy growing at a rate of 3% from April through June. Consumer spending also increased, primarily in areas such as health care, restaurants and nondurable goods like food, gas and clothing. However, the report also reflected underlying weaknesses: most of the growth came from a drop in imports, while demand from U.S. consumers and businesses rose at its slowest rate since 2022.
