Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Announces Presidential Bid

April 20, 2023

I’ve come here today to announce my candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the president of the United States.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announcing his official White House campaign. He specifically chose to make his bid on April 19th in Boston – the day in 1775 that British and American soldiers exchanged fire in Massachusetts, thus beginning the American Revolution.

Why It Matters: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. – nephew of President John F. Kennedy and Ted Kennedy, and son of Robert Kennedy – is the first recognizable Democrat entering the presidential race of 2024. President Biden has not yet announced his candidacy, though is expected to soon.

More about Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: A California resident and 69 years old, he is mostly known for his work as an environmental lawyer but has also been a vocal critic of the COVID-19 vaccines, the pharmaceutical industry, and social media companies for censorship, which he mentioned in his speech.

A note about his at times shaky voice: Kennedy has a rare disease called spasmodic dysphonia that began when he was 43 years old. In an interview with Oprah in 2007, he said, “While it doesn’t hurt, it certainly makes life a bit more complicated.”
