I’m here to declare myself an Independent candidate for president of the United States.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announcing his change from the Democratic presidential bid to the Independent presidential bid.

Why It Matters: Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. withdrew from the Democratic Presidential race and officially entered the race as an Independent, making him the second Independent candidate. This leaves President Biden and writer Marianne Williamson as the only two candidates in the Democratic race.

Background: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. – nephew of President John F. Kennedy and Ted Kennedy, and son of Robert Kennedy – announced his campaign in April. The 69-year-old California resident established himself as the first recognizable Democrat entering the presidential race of 2024.

Just a note: Robert Kennedy’s family denounced his candidacy, saying his leadership would be “perilous” for the country – see their announcement here.
