Rosalynn Carter Laid to Rest

Her life was a sermon. And it was a mighty testament to the power of faith and the power of a deep and determined love.

Rosalynn Carter’s grandson, Jason Carter, speaking at his grandmother’s memorial service in Atlanta, Georgia on Tuesday. The former first lady’s funeral takes place on Wednesday in her hometown of Plains, Georgia. Mrs. Carter passed away at the age of 96 on November 19.

Why It Matters: Mrs. Carter’s husband, Former President Jimmy Carter attended the public service, emerging from hospice care and joining family, friends, presidents and every living first lady to honor her life. Her family, friends and pastors shared eulogies and spoke of her life of service in a ceremony described as reflecting hertaste for simple elegance.

Kathryn Cade, who worked alongside Mrs. Carter for decades, shared, “What a remarkable woman she was — wife, mother, business manager, political strategist, diplomat, advocate, author. Yet what I remember most about her was her tireless dedication to taking care of others.”

Did You Know? According to reports, the last time living first ladies were seen together in one place was in 2018 for the funeral of former President George H.W. Bush.
