The blood and treasure that both Ukraine and Russia have been spending in this war would be better spent on the needs of their people.

Part of a statement posted on X from the White House regarding President Donald Trump’s call with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin regarding a potential ceasefire in Ukraine.

Why It Matters: Russia did not agree to a full 30-day ceasefire, previously negotiated between Ukraine and the United States. According to the White House, President Putin conceded to halt strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure targets for 30 days: “the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace.” In addition, the White House noted additional negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East. President Putin called on President Trump to end military and intelligence aid to Ukraine, according to Russia state media, as a precursor to a broader ceasefire. The timing of the limited ceasefire, and potential news of a broader ceasefire deal, remains TBD at this time.
