… Russia is blackmailing the world with hunger.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following Russia’s recent blockade at Ukrainian ports; Ukraine is one of the world’s largest exporters of sunflower oil and grain. The blockade comes after Russia accused Ukraine of staging a drone attack on Russian ships.

Why It Matters: When the war began in February, Russia began blocking Ukrainian ports; Ukraine produced about 10% of the world's wheat at the time. In July, the United Nations negotiated grain exporting cooperation between Ukraine and Russia, which brought down global food prices by about 15% from peak prices in March.
