What To Know: Hundreds of Ukrainian troops are missing after their retreat from the eastern city of Avdiivka last week, Russia’s biggest gain since May. Some Western officials and soldiers believe they may have been captured by Russian troops.

According to The New York Times, a precise count of missing soldiers is unavailable for the moment, “But two soldiers with knowledge of Ukraine’s retreat estimated that 850 to 1,000 soldiers appear to have been captured or are unaccounted for.” Dmytro Lykhovii, a spokesman for Ukrainian Gen. Tarnavsky, said some soldiers were kidnapped but called the report that hundreds had been captured “misinformation.”

While American officials have said Avdiivka is not a signifcant setback, they acknowledge that Ukranian soldier morale is low and that the military has struggled to recruit.
