Russian Foreign Minister Visits North Korea

October 18, 2023

We deeply value your unwavering and principled support for Russia’s actions in the context of the special military operation in Ukraine …

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov in a speech during his two-day visit to North Korea.

Why It Matters: Lavrov’s visit to North Korea (a U.S.-designated state sponsor of terrorism) underscores the growing cooperation between the isolated country and Russia. On Wednesday, Lavrov said, “the Russian Federation extends its complete support and solidarity with the aspirations of the DPRK [North Korea] led by … Kim Jong-un … This mutual solidarity and shared commitment to advancing our comprehensive strategic partnership was on full display during the historic summit between President Vladimir Putin and Chairman Kim Jong-un at the Vostochny Cosmodrome last month,” referencing when the North Korean leader made his first foreign trip in more than four years, in which Pres. Putin and Kim Jong Un discussed military cooperation. Reuters reports that Lavrov’s visit is “seen as setting the stage for a visit by President Vladimir Putin,” and comes only days after the U.S. said North Korea has provided munitions to Russia for its war in Ukraine. Regarding these allegations, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Pescov said, “They report about it all the time – they don’t provide any evidence.”
