Yulia Navalnaya speaking to the European Parliament on Wednesday, nearly two weeks after the death of her husband Alexey Navalny – a high-profile opposition leader imprisoned under Putin’s regime. Yulia and Alexey were married more than 20 years.

Why It Matters: Alexey Navalny’s funeral is set for Friday, though the family struggled to find a place that would host the “farewell event” due the political climate. Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, told the European Parliament regarding the funeral: “I’m not sure yet whether it will be peaceful or whether police will arrest those who have come to say goodbye to my husband.”

Background: Navalny, 47, died earlier this month in a remote penal colony; The cause of his death remains unconfirmed by Russia, though many Western leaders (including Pres. Biden) hold Pres. Putin responsible what they describe as Navalny’s murder). Navalny was a high-profile opposition leader against Pres. Putin; Navalny not only pursued political office in Russia but published investigative work exposing what he believed to be the corruption of the Putin regime. The cause of his death remains unconfirmed by Russia, though many Western leaders (including Pres. Biden) hold Pres. Putin responsible.
