I firmly believe the president’s decision to withdraw from Afghanistan was the right one.
Sec. of State Blinken during a hearing on the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan before the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Why It Matters: This presented an opportunity for Congress and the Biden administration to discuss the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 – specifically the controversial end of America’s longest war. Sec. of State Blinken answered questions from the Republican-led House Foreign Affairs Committee, before he exits from his cabinet position at the end of the Biden administration.
Context: “The State Department has argued that Blinken has testified before Congress 14 times on the Afghanistan withdrawal, while Foreign Affairs Republicans have accused him of skirting accountability by refusing to testify in front of it.” (The National News Desk)
Sec. Blinken defended the decision, stating that al-Qaeda has not regained strength, the U.S. government was able to achieve its goals (such as the targeted killing of al-Qaeda’s leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul), and the U.S. maintains a leadership role on the world stage. Sec. Blinken stated, “… no one anticipated that the government and the Afghan armed forces would collapse as quickly as they did.”
Republicans took issue not only with the way the withdrawal was carried out but also the continued flow of taxpayer money to Afghanistan. Congressman Brian Mast (R-FL), a veteran who served in Afghanistan where he lost both of his legs in an IED attack, says the lack of diplomats in Afghanistan provides very little oversight on how taxpayer dollars are being spent. Congressman Mast will chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee in the next Congress.
