As a lifelong supporter of Israel, it has become clear to me: The Netanyahu coalition no longer fits the needs of Israel after Oct. 7.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Thursday calling for Israelis to hold elections and replace Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to better combat the threat of Hamas, a U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organization.

Why It Matters: Sen. Schumer, the highest-ranked Jewish elected official in U.S. history, gave a speech on the Senate floor arguing PM Netanyahu cares more about his political longevity than serving the country’s best interests – particularly amidst the current turmoil as the region marks more than five months of war. Sen. Schumer criticized Hamas and Palestinians that support the terrorist organization, calling on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to “step down and be replaced by a new generation of Palestinian leaders who will work toward attaining peace with a Jewish state.”

“The high-level warning comes as an increasing number of Democrats have pushed back against Israel and as President Joe Biden has stepped up public pressure on Netanyahu’s government, arguing that he needs to pay more attention to the civilian death toll in Gaza,” explains The Associated Press.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-KY) challenged Sen. Schumer’s comments and stated on social media, “The primary ‘obstacles to peace’ in Israel’s region are genocidal terrorists and corrupt PA leaders who repeatedly reject peace deals. Foreign observers who cannot keep this straight ought to refrain from interfering in the democracy of a sovereign ally.”
