Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on the Continuing Resolution Bill that passed in the House and might now pass in the Senate in order to avoid a government shutdown.
Why It Matters: Sixty votes are needed in the Senate to advance the GOP spending bill, and with Republicans holding 53 seats, some Democrat votes are needed. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer signaled he will vote to advance the bill to avoid a government shutdown. The procedural vote is set to take place Friday afternoon, and if it crosses the 60-vote threshold, the bill will be brought to the floor for a vote where a simple majority will be enough for it to pass.
About The Bill: The CR bill would fund the government through September 30 and set the budget for the fiscal year at $1.600 trillion, with $893 billion for defense and $708 billion for nondefense, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
